Woman sitting alone on a patio reading a book, surrounded by plants, enjoying her alone time, how to access your inner voice

The only thing I need to access my inner guidance

I used to think that inner guidance was supposed to be conversational, loud, and bursting at the seams, waiting to be beckoned into existence.

However, the more I tried to follow one of those “How to access your inner voice” articles, the farther I was from hearing anything…at all.

Over the last decade though, as I’ve been sifting through all the advice and opinions out there, I’ve learned that…

Silence is ONLY thing I need to access my inner guidance.

This is the only place I get to be fully alone, with as little distraction from anything or anyone else.

No screens, no alerts and notifications, and no allure from the external world. This enticement can come in the form of information, music, news, my dog or cat, YouTube, people’s opinions, or any other daily demand.

All of this takes up a lot of mental bandwidth, even though it’s so normalized.

Making space for silence

Silence isn’t just found while sitting criss-cross-applesauce meditating (although it’s one of my favorite ways).

In fact, the best way to receive guidance is to find little moments throughout the day where you can briefly recalibrate back to your undivided attention.

Some things that work for me include:

  • Going on a walk
  • Exercising
  • Going to the bathroom without my phone
  • Showering
  • Tracking raindrops down a window
  • Household chores
  • Taking a deep breath
  • Watching trees sway in the wind
  • Journaling
  • Staring at shapes in the ceiling or wall
  • Looking at clouds or planes flying by
  • Stretching
  • Daydreaming
  • Drinking tea

The idea here is to simply “hang out” with yourself.

Having a hard time coming up with something? Think back to how you used to spend time during childhood.

Connecting with your inner guidance is about finding ways to be with YOU and only you. If you’re needing answers from within, the only place you will ever find them is…within.

Over time, you’ll start to discern your inner guidance from the rest.
